Christmas fundraiser for orphanage

Just days before Christmas, Sam Dong Boys Town Orphanage will host a benefit party to make this holiday season a memorable one for almost 70 orphans.

Sam Dong Boys Town Orphanage, located in Seoul, currently houses 69 potential adoptees, some of whom are less than a year old.

Boys Town is also considered a historic orphanage because it was first established during the Korean War by the U.S. Armys 5th regimental combat team.

I hope that we can continue to recruit more volunteers to help out at this orphanage, said Thomas J. Fortunato, the main organizer for the benefit. If you are looking for a way to give back to the community, this is definitely a worthy cause.

Volunteers and donors are asked to help with games and activities at the benefit party.
Others can simply donate money for food and drinks. The orphanage will also accept food and beverages brought to the facility. Boys Town encourages individuals or groups to sponsor one or more orphans by buying a gift or donating money.

We currently have four foreign volunteers at this orphanage and many female
Korean volunteers, said Fortunato. But, we strongly encourage more Korean males to volunteer. We even have a Facebook page - you can get started that way.

Fortunato, who has taught English in Ghana and now Korea for more than five years, has done similar work in West Africa as a social worker helping the physically handicapped reclaim their mobility and rebuild self-esteem. Since moving to Seoul in 2003, Fortunato began volunteering at Boys Town Orphanage. He recalls seeing many kids come and go over the years.

We have some really talented and wonderful young men here, he said. Even if you dont adopt, I urge everyone to just volunteer. These kids need mentors. I think volunteering will give anyone a sense of joy and a different perspective on life.

We already found someone to play the role as Santa, but we need someone to donate a Santa suit, said Fortunato. Anyone want to be an elf or a reindeer?

The fundraiser will be Sunday, Dec. 21 at 1 p.m. Sam Dong Boys Orphanage is located next to World Cup 7 apartment complex. From Mapo-gu Sunway Station, Exit No. 1, walk straight out and take green 7011 bus or the blue 271 bus. For further information, contact Fortunato at [email protected] or call 010-5844-1002.
